What you need to open your ShopMyExchange account

Opening a ShopMyExchange account requires your military ID, email, US address, and a funding source; the process takes under 10 minutes.

The portal follows a strict verification process that aligns with Department of Defense regulations. Account data is encrypted with 256-bit SSL, and we never share your information with third parties.

First, you'll need your military ID. ShopMyExchange accepts ID from AAFES, Navy Exchange, and other authorized exchanges.

1. Your military ID (active duty, reserve, or veteran) or dependent ID.
2. A valid email address and US mailing address.
3. Your Social Security number for identity verification, per federal law.
4. Funding source: a linked bank account or debit card.

Verification process and requirements

Funding your ShopMyExchange account

Funding your ShopMyExchange account is free and instantaneous via bank transfer, ACH, or direct deposit from your military pay, and you can choose any combination of these methods at any time, but note that only US-based accounts are supported because the platform is designed to serve the same network as AAFES and Navy Exchange, and it automatically applies your military discount on qualified purchases.

When you first open an account, you'll link a US bank account that supports ACH transfers. The portal accepts checking and savings accounts from over 4,000 institutions, including those used by AAFES and Navy Exchange paychecks. At ShopMyExchange, we do not charge any loading fees for ACH transfers, and the average transfer completes in 24 hours. However, we found that prepaid cards from other exchanges often lacked the necessary routing numbers, so we recommend direct bank links to avoid delays.

For those who prefer traditional methods, we accept wire transfers from any US bank, typically settled the same business day. There's a $10 fee for inbound wires, which is far below the $25 typical at most banks. The data does not cover accounts opened before 2015, so legacy users should contact support for their records. This method does NOT apply to accounts funded with foreign currency cards or non-US bank accounts, so if you're stationed overseas, you'll need to arrange an alternative via customer service.

After opening, you can update your profile, add authorized users, and set up automated savings from the dashboard in less than five minutes, and the platform also lets you set spending limits per merchant, which helps you stay on budget while enjoying tax-free shopping at AAFES and Navy Exchange locations, and it also allows you to download your transaction history for tax purposes.

To keep your account secure, we recommend enabling two-factor authentication, which is mandatory for withdrawals over $2,500. You can also set spending alerts for every transaction. We've built the portal to integrate with the same military exchange network used by AAFES and Navy Exchange, so your tax-free status is automatically applied at checkout. If you need assistance, the support team is available 24/7 via chat or phone. For account changes like updating your phone number, you'll need to verify your identity with a government-issued ID.
