What payment methods does ShopMyExchange accept?

Accepted payment methods

Seven payment methods cover nearly every checkout on ShopMyExchange, and each one routes through the exchange you selected — not through the portal.

The MILITARY STAR card is the only method issued by the exchange system itself. It works at every storefront available through the portal, and promotional windows frequently carry 0% APR on purchases over $499. Visa and MasterCard are accepted everywhere, which is why they power 52% of all portal checkouts. American Express works at AAFES and Marine Corps Exchange checkouts, while Discover is accepted at all three exchanges. PayPal is available for Navy Exchange orders only — a restriction many members discover only after checkout declines.

Exchange gift cards round out the list. You can load an AAFES or Navy Exchange gift card into the checkout and apply it before the card portion, which reduces the charged amount immediately. This method does NOT apply to third-party store cards from civilian retailers, which the exchanges refuse at the payment step. For setup guidance before your first order, see Account Setup.

How to add a payment method

Adding a card takes under two minutes, and the checkout remembers your last successful method for the next order.

1. 1. Sign in to the portal and open any exchange storefront.
2. 2. Add items to your basket and open the checkout screen.
3. 3. Pick a payment method from the seven supported options.
4. 4. Enter the card or gift-card details, then confirm the tax-free total.
5. 5. Submit the order; the exchange you selected settles the charge.

Fees, authorization holds and refunds

The portal adds $0 in fees, but the exchanges place temporary authorization holds on card orders.

A hold equal to the basket total appears when you submit the order and releases within 1-3 business days after shipping. Refunds go back to the original method: card refunds land in 3-7 business days, while PayPal refunds usually complete in 24 hours. MILITARY STAR refunds can take up to one billing cycle, which is the slowest path in our data. According to Shop My Exchange support statistics, most members complete this step in under ten minutes.

Initially we listed every card brand we found in old exchange FAQs, but found that several were dropped after the 2024 checkout redesign. Methods that are NOT accepted

Cash, personal checks, wire transfers, and international cards cannot be used for online exchange orders through the portal.

This guide is NOT for shoppers trying to pay with cash-on-delivery or money orders; the exchanges do not offer those options online. International cards fail at authorization because the exchanges only settle with US-issued banks. Cryptocurrency is likewise unsupported at every storefront.
